Tezcatl (Magic Mirror) is an obsidian sculpture hand-carved in an artisan workshop in Valle de Teotihuacan, Mexico. The sculpture shares the same design as an iPhone 7 and the same raw material that Aztec mirrors were made from, volcanic glass.

Obsidian mirrors, called Tezcatl in Náhuatl, were instruments used in sacred rituals and the main attribute of the deity Tezcatlipoca (smoking mirror). Wizards used these polished black glass cylinders to travel to other worlds and see the future.

The Unreal is an artifical space created with the game software “Unreal Engine”. In a guided tour inspired by a meditation guide, the viewer is led across a mine landscape. Through a metaphorical approach and a recreation of a utopian reality, we simulate a walkable immersive virtual experience. The route, marked by a speculative derive, offers a representation of Silicon Valley's imaginaries about the infinite and individual freedom. A contradictory narrative exalts the failure of techno-capitalism alternatives and the colonization of all imagined spaces.

Ghosting Image/Imagen fantasma
Ongoing project. 2016 - 2020

Ghosting Image

2019
Screenprinting with thermochromic ink
by Multipleeditions
50x70 cm.
2019

Ghosting Image aims to examine underground materiality. The screenprinting is printed with thermographic ink that reacts to the temperature of the body. When touched, the ink disappears. Distracted by the effect it may take time for the viewer to recognize that the image they are touching is a reproduction of a coltan mine. Coltan is the colloquial name for the mineral columbite-tantalite and, for a long time, its extraction has been closely associated with human rights violations in the Republic of Congo and other countries. Ghosting Image reminds us that a daily gesture (the tactile action), is nothing more than an automatic action that makes us forget the mineral nature that composes its raw material.
Imagen Fantasma

[ASMR] Reading You To Sleep. Soft Spoken Relaxation About Affective Capitalism

2020
Videos on YouTube
4 YouTube links
In collaboration with Aino ASMR, Ailen Lucia ASMR, Abi ASMR, easy ASMR and Articulate Desgin ASMR.
Languages: Swedish, English, Spanish.

This artistic enquiry is a collaboration with members of the ASMR (Autonomous Sensory Meridian Response) therapeutic online culture. This viral social media trend has become a collective, altruistic response to help people with insomnia, depression and anxiety, common symptoms and pathologies associated with the demands of our accelerated present.

The project invites the viewer to experience a critical reading of the increase of individual therapeutic solutions through soft whispering and relaxing sounds.

[ASMR] Reading You To Sleep explores how a critical narrative can be shared in the same media. I am interested in the sensorial experience of the satisfying ASMR videos, the desire to feel beyond the screens and the relation between bodies and devices. The online display offers the opportunity to analyse its own natural environment in the digital realm. Its subversive potential lies in this destabilization of reality, insisting on the estrangement, and transforming the critical engagement into a physical/ sensorial experience through ASMR.

ACT 1: Sleep-mode. The insomniac spectator in the attention economy.
In collaboration with Aino ASMR
Swedish, subtitles in English

In this Act Aino ASMR performs the doctor in a sleep clinic roleplay. The Sleep Clinic Role-play is a common genre in ASMR, where the ASMR artist performs a close clinical exploration to help the viewer to sleep.

In this ACT, the performer conducts a participative experiment about “Social Media and Sleep” and asks personal questions meanwhile playing a pre-recorded audio with information about the attention ecconomy and sleeping as a non-productive action.

ACT 2: You are your own biggest project. The creative and happy entrepreneur
In collaboration with Ailen Lucia ASMR
Spanish, subtitles in English

Ailén Lucía ASMR performs the “personal attention” roleplay. In this type of roleplay, intimacy and direct speech with touching the camera lens fake a close-up intimate situation.

In this ACT, divided in two parts, the performer mimics other ASMR artists’ attentive behaviours, but in the second part she reads an academic text about the role of emotions in market economy.

ACT 3: Taking care of you. Affective Capitalism (Mi amiga intergalactica te maquilla)
In collaboration with Abi ASMR.
Spanish, subtitles in English

Abi ASMR performs a make-up session with her role-play called “Your intergalactic friend”. This type of make- up session is common in the ASMR community, establishing an intimate relationship with the viewer meanwhile performing care actions (massaging, applying make-up, etc.).

The performer decided to not read the article but introduce terms such as Affective Capitalism as part of her role-play.

ACT 4: Don’t forget to subscribe! Affective Networks and the monetisation of emotions
In collaboration with easy ASMR.
English

easy ASMR performs an academic text about social media and affective platforms in his particular ASMR style.
He performs the text through different triggers and sound effects to create a physical reaction.

SOMA on Streaming is the result of a collaboration with the ASMR artist Abi ASMR from Buenos Aires. With more than 207K subscribers, a common activity that she uses to engage with her followers is to perform live sessions that stream on YouTube with an open interactive chat. For this collaboration I invited her to read fragments of Aldous Huxley’s novel “New Brave World”. The fragments read were descriptions of SOMA, the drug used in the novel to find happiness and scape from reality.

The reading was performed on the 10th August 2019 at 21.00h (Buenos Aires), 2 days before the Argentinean election. The experiment was recorded including the comments in real time from the followers attending the performative lecture.
